-terrorist official tells the u.s. to focus -- economic targets like banks and stock exchanges. at the same time, developments on the battlefields in afghanistan and pakistan that are linked to the plot, apparently. here are key points. authorities say a german citizen of afghan descent is in custody spelling out the terror plan, like the terror plot in mumbai that killed 164 people two years ago. osama bin laden apparently approved the plan. no word so far if threats were also made against the united states. now, to the war zone in afghanistan and pakistan. nato says an air strike killed a top al qaeda commander in northern afghanistan along its border with pakistan. the u.s. recently increased the number of drone attacks in pakistan, and this may be due in part to information on the terror plot. drone targets in pakistan include taliban and al qaeda forces and militants linked to al qaeda. and the taliban denied claims made by the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, general david petraeus, that the taliban wants, was in contact with afghan government officials about possible peace talks. there'

and the u.s. are now on full alert this morning. agents are investigating a possible threat from al qaeda-linked terrorists. >> they say this threat is credible and could involve commando-style tactics. brian ross investigates. >> reporter: tonight in paris, police evacuated the eiffel tower for the second time in two weeks after a bomb threat was called in. no bomb was found today. but officials in france are taking no chances. given what they believe is a very real threat. "we currently have reached the spike in the threat of an attack, which is unquestionable," the head of the french national police said last week. "as i speak to you this very moment, there is a specific threat against french interests," he added. this new threat to france, as well as germany and britain and the u.s., is coming from pakistan, according to intelligence officials. in large part from a contingent of german citizens who have been recruited for a jihad against the west over the last four years. >> some are german converts. many are turks. many are arabs. right new now we already have the first afghans and e

out and instead stay on the job. one person tells us she plans to work until she dies. i'll tell what you, this isn't a new phenomenon. take a look at these numbers here. in 1998, 12% of workers over 65 stayed on the job by choice. in 2008, 17% of older workers delayed retirement. now we're at 18%. so we're seeing this number inch up. by 2018, it's forecast that 22% of workers are going to delay their requirement. now not everyone is staying at their current job. some choose to take on new projects. others start a business. one person tells us when he retired he started a small ebay business. then again some other people just decide to change careers. they got the confidence to do that. one mother who retired from the public school system is now a college professor and education consultant. some people have options, t.j., because at this age they're at the height of their careers and not really ready to pack it in and start golfing, gardening and bird watching. they want to reach to new heights in their careers. >> you give some of the reasons there they might want to keep working. ho

, the u.s. has ramped up missile strikes over militant training grounds in pakistan. we have two reports on all of this tonight from our senior team, beginning right here with chief investigative correspondent brian ross. brian? >> reporter: diane, what's behind all this is what a senior u.s. and european officials tell us is a credible threat of a series of commando style terror attacks against france, germany, britain and possibly the u.s. the official said there's no specific time or place known, but that the plot was detected this summer, after the capture of a radicalized german citizen who was training for the attacks in pakistan. now, a worldwide manhunt is under way. among those being sought are a group of other radicalized germans who have been training at terror camps in pakistan, producing videos in german to gain more recruits back home. german officials say some of the recruits actually came from the same mosque in hamburg where the 9/11 hijackers gathered. the mosque was closed in early august after officials learned of the plot. >> most of these guys share a very pronounce

are investigating whether any attacks were planned here for the u.s. france has been on heightened alert for several weeks and just yesterday a threat forced the eiffel tower to be evacuated. nbc jenny is live in london with the very latest. jenny, i understand london security level is at severe. what else can you tell us? >> well, yes, the security levels have been at severe since january, actually. we are on a heightened state of alert here. the reason that the threat level is still at severe meaning that a terror attack is highly likely means that this plot has been uncovered. nbc news has learned from talking to pakistani intelligence officials that some british born pakistanis were arrested in pakistan earlier this month. now, when they were interrogated by the u.s., the british and pakistani intelligence officials, they revealed that they had planned to go on a shooting spree, possibly starting in the uk and it's slightly unclear and they certainly go on to attack france, germany and denmark, as well. in response to this, the u.s. has actually stepped up their number of drone attacks in northe

coast through the weekend. eric fisher joins us now from ft. lauderdale with the latest. what are you watching, eric? >> i'm watching a lot of rain, tamron, moving into south florida. it is not the type of day that the beach resorts hope for. we are going to see this rain continuing through the afternoon into the evening as well. although winds not going to be a big part of this story. i've got a little personal weather station here. the water is off to my left. when i look at it, we're talking 5 to 15 miles an hour. that's certainly not an epic storm. this isn't going to go down in the history books. in terms of the wind, really not a big deal. it became a tropical storm by reaching wind speeds of 40 miles an hour. as it moves northward, we could see gusts. the 4 to 8 inches of rainfall in south florida, that can pose a problem, especially for the more urban areas. the water stacks up. we have a lot of paved roads. especially as we get into this evening commute, we could -- we always tell people turn around, don't drown. most of the flooding-related fatalities occur when people try t
